For Andy Hansell, community has always been at the heart of his faith journey. Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Andy first got involved with a Wesley Foundation during his undergraduate years at Virginia Tech, thanks to a friend’s recommendation. “I joined and have been involved ever since,” he recalls with a smile. When graduate school brought him to UIUC, he was delighted to discover another Wesley community waiting for him here.

Now a second-year Ph.D. student in chemistry, Andy describes Wesley as a place where friendship and belonging have shaped his experience in profound ways. “The people and relationships I’ve made at Wesley are what I love the most,” he says. “The friends I’ve made are some of the most loving, supporting, amazing people, and I’m excited to make more of these friendships.”
As a peer minister, Andy is particularly energized by the chance to plan fun fellowship events—experiences that help students connect, laugh, and feel at home.
He hopes to continue forming lasting friendships through fellowship and worship, building on the joy he has already found here.
Outside the lab and classroom, Andy carries a quiet spirit of curiosity and adventure. He has visited 49 out of 50 U.S. states, a fact that surprises nearly everyone he meets. He loves learning new things—whether through books or educational videos—and finds rest by reading outdoors in a hammock whenever the weather cooperates.
Music also plays a meaningful role in his life. The song “2085” by his favorite band, AJR, has been especially significant lately. Its theme—embracing who you truly are rather than who others expect you to be—resonates deeply with him. “I like to believe my faith led me to Wesley, where I’ve been able to be myself and grow as an individual.”
Whether at Midweek, around a trivia table at Harvest Market, or simply welcoming new students into the fold, Andy brings warmth, enthusiasm, and a genuine love for community. With his steady presence and passion for helping people feel connected, he is eager to continue growing with Wesley and widening the circle of friendship for all who walk through its doors.
