For Emmima Gnanaraj, a second-year graduate student in Information Management, Wesley has become a place of belonging far from her hometown of Mumbai, India. She first walked through Wesley’s doors during her very first semester at Illinois, searching for a Sunday service. “From the very first visit, I felt a sense of warmth and belonging that made me want to come back,” she remembers.

That welcome quickly grew into something deeper. “The people,” she says, “are what I love most. Everyone at Wesley is so caring, loving, and welcoming—it truly feels like a family. No matter what kind of week I’ve had, I know I’ll be met with kindness and support here.”

Now stepping into her role as a peer minister, Emmima is excited about creating the same experience for others. “I’m most excited about building real connections and creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and valued,” she shares. Whether organizing an event or having a one-on-one conversation, she hopes to be a source of encouragement and joy.

Her leadership goals are rooted in empathy. “I want to grow more confident in leading with purpose, to strengthen my communication and organizational skills, and to learn how to support a diverse group of people.”

Outside of Wesley, Emmima finds joy in dancing—a passion that lets her express herself and shake off stress. She also admits she’s “super clumsy,” always tripping over nothing or spilling things at the worst times, though she laughs that it usually makes for a good story.

Her faith is what keeps her grounded through it all. “My faith has been my foundation throughout college. It’s given me strength during stressful times, clarity when I felt uncertain, and comfort when I’ve been far from home,” she reflects. A passage from 2 Corinthians recently inspired her to think more deeply about forgiveness and grace: “It challenged me to reflect on my own heart and how I approach conflict or hurt with others.”

When she needs to recharge, Emmima turns to her skincare routine and simple rituals of rest—watching YouTube vlogs, exploring the peaceful gardens at Japan House, or unwinding with a favorite show.

With her warm spirit and passion for building community, Emmima is ready to continue making Wesley a place where everyone belongs.
